“A BADIA”

The building is located in Via Etrusca, right in the heart of the historic centre of Vizzini. Here, a long time ago, ancient Sicilian people built a town called “BIDIS” which, soon after, was colonized by the Greek s .In 1693 the town was destroyed by a terrible earthquake and later rebuilt by the “BIDINESI”, the inhabitants of “BIDIS”, right in the same place changing its name into Vizzini.
The landscape and the narrow mediaeval streets around “A BADIA” provided the natural setting to the works of Giovanni Verga, the famous novelist and playwright, who was born here on August 31st,1840. Any visitor coming to Vizzini can breathe the same atmosphere and feel the same emotions as the characters involved in “Cavalleria Rusticana”, “Mastro don Gesualdo”,“Jeli il pastore”,” La Lupa ” and definitely plunge into the literary world made of land and stone, word and blood, that is the very contest were most of Verga’s stories are developed.
“A BADIA” offers the pleasure of quiet and relaxing walks among the façade of the old buildings facing each other in the mediaeval streets of the old town centre as well as the opportunity to enjoy the rich and valuable artistic heritage of the town – gothic-catalan churches, baroque buildings, stately homes, paintings and lots of well-refined handicraft – and, guess what, breathe fresh and unpolluted air while tasting a genuine local cuisine rich with really delicious dishes.
Set in the Monastero delle Benedettine founded by San Gregorio Magno inVia Santa Maria dei Greci, “A BADIA” is also the ideal place for those interested in a sort of religious type of tourism. Indeed, very close to it, one can admire the beautiful gothic cathedral erected in honour of San Gregorio Magno in the 15th century, the Basilica of San Vito, the Friars Minor Conventual’s Monastery and the SS. Annunziata’s church.
Here the veneration of S. Antonio of Padua is still alive and the famous grotto “ de juso” where the saint used to pray and celebrate mass is visited by lots of pilgrims especially on June 13th.
