The “Giovanni Verga” cooperative
and the “Teatro Skenè” association, placed in Via Roma , 27 Vizzini (CT),
have always been engaged in discovering and highly appreciating the work
of famous and less famous Sicilian playwrights. Their aim is to know and
let other people know through the writers’ works, our ancestors’ values,
habits and costumes. In addition to that , they have also enlarged their
interest to the works of many other Italian playwrights.
The “Teatro Skenè’” was founded
in 1982.Since the beginning of its activity, great attention has been
given to the realistic literature and above all to realism in drama.
Actually, for a sentimental
reason , the writer often dealt with has always been Giovanni Verga, a
famous novelist, playwright and short story writer born in Vizzini on
August 31st, 1840.His famous work “Cavalleria Rusticana” ,
well known all over the world as well as most of his works were set in
Vizzini and dealt with its people. Through the study of verism in drama
and literature , it is possible to plunge into the folk culture of the 19th
century and discover values, ideas and view of life typical of the people
who lived in that period. In so doing , it is possible to find out our
roots and have a clear understanding of today’s Sicilian people.
Since 1982,The “Teatro Skenè”
and his artistic director, Giovanni Ielo, have been involved in
various performances, the so called “Manifestazioni Verghiane” edited by
Alfredo Mazzone. Afterwards, they have given life to a series of
performances called “ verists at drama “ running to their 5th
edition.
At present, the “Teatro Skenè”
association”, together with the “Giovanni Verga” cooperative, is engaged
in a series of performances held along the streets and included in a
sort of literary and tourist route to the most significant places
mentioned by Giovanni Verga in his works as well as to the artistic
heritage mainly made of baroque churches and buildings here in Vizzini.
Recently, they have enlarged their activities including the “Viaggi
Sentimentali” taking place in the Giovanni Verga’s Parco Letterario .
