Vizzini, 619 m. above the sea level, is a small town about 60 km far from Catania.
The place enjoys a favourable geographical position since it is located not far from
the tourist area including Piazza Armerina – Caltagirone – Siracusa. It is well known
mainly as the birthplace of Giovanni Verga, the famous novelist and playwright, who
was born here on August 31st , 1840.
Verga’s best works deal with Sicily and its
people. His style, dry, matter- of- fact, and impersonal is still highly effective.
His great collection of short-stories “ Vita dei Campi” (1880) includes “Cavalleria
Rusticana” which Verga adapted into a play. This tale became the source for an opera
by Pietro Mascagni. Any visitor coming to Vizzini can breathe the same atmosphere and
feel the same emotions as the characters involved in “Cavalleria Rusticana” , “Ieli il Pastore”
, “Mastro don Gesualdo”,”La Lupa”, and definitely plunge into the literary world made
of land and stone, word and blood, that is the very contest were most of Verga’s stories
are developed. Along the literary itinerary as well as through the theatrical performances
staged on the way, one can emotionally be involved in the struggle and the desperate yet
unsuccessful efforts of Verga’s characters in order to improve their life.
Moreover, like
a flattering woman, Vizzini offers the visitor the pleasure of quiet and relaxing walks
among the façade of its old buildings facing each other in the narrow mediaeval streets
of the old town centre as well as the opportunity to enjoy its rich and valuable artistic
heritage - churches, stately homes, paintings and lots of well- refined handicraft - and,
it goes without saying, breathe fresh and unpolluted air while tasting a genuine local
cuisine rich with really delicious dishes.
No doubt a visit to Vizzini will be a wonderful and unforgettable experience which
will definitely turn an excursion into a unique and extraordinary holiday. We kindly
remind you that daily tours throughout the town are arranged by qualified staff.
