Vizzini, 619 m. above the sea level, is a small town about 60 km far from Catania. The place enjoys a favourable geographical position since it is located not far from the tourist area including Piazza Armerina – Caltagirone – Siracusa. It is well known mainly as the birthplace of Giovanni Verga, the famous novelist and playwright, who was born here on August 31st , 1840.

Verga’s best works deal with Sicily and its people. His style, dry, matter- of- fact, and impersonal is still highly effective. His great collection of short-stories “ Vita dei Campi” (1880) includes “Cavalleria Rusticana” which Verga adapted into a play. This tale became the source for an opera by Pietro Mascagni.
